Consultative meeting on the introduction of TVET Professional Bachelor’s and Masters’ Programs

Kigali:  On 26th July 2019, at Nobleza Hotel, Rwanda Polytechnic  in collaboration with WDA organized a one-day meeting with a wide range of TVET Stakeholders on the introduction of TVET Professional Degrees (Level 8 under the name of Bachelors of Technology and Level 9 under the name of Masters of Technology).

Speaking to the media, the Vice Chancellor of Rwanda Polytechnic Dr.  James Gashumba said that this is still a proposal and once approved by the cabinet they will introduce Bachelor and Masters ’programs considered as professional degrees for Technical, Vocational and Training (TVET) students.

He further expressed that they would like to open doors to Rwandan people to compete in labor market.

‘’We used to offer level 7 for TVET Advanced diploma considered as A1 and it seems that we close the doors or opportunities to our students to get another qualification such as Bachelor and Masters’’ Dr. James said

He stressed that once approved, the first graduates would be enrolled in these programs in the academic year of 2020/2021. He went on saying that before scheduling for a bachelor’s degree, Advanced diplomas holders have to work in industries at least two or three years.

Dr. James Gashumba expressed that advanced diploma graduates to attend Bachelor and Masters ’programs will not exceed 20% to avoid some students who think to run for a high level of degrees.  Up to now, there are currently between 6,000 and 7,000 graduates with advanced diploma since 2010.

 Eng. Kazawadi Papias, an Entrepreneur said that bachelor and master’s programmes in TVET are timely considering that most of the graduates from polytechnics with advanced diploma have in the past resorted to seek such degrees from general universities in Rwanda and others across the region and added that the programmes have to be aligned to what skills are needed by local industries.

 Once approved, the professional degree programs will combine technological and innovative studies so that the graduates will be able to function in various levels in the work place, from shop floor technologies to liaising with senior-level management. The combination of technology and innovation course work, along with our mandatory industry-based learning experiences, will give the students the advanced skills to make technology and innovation decisions in the industry-based society context. Moreover, the Professional degrees will offer an innovator approach to education in the current dynamic world of technology by taking the students beyond textbook learning to “advanced hands-on” experiences through laboratory/workshop and industry work experience.
